Haters are always gonna hate, and that’s exactly what Selena Gomez has been dealing with in her relationship with Benny Blanco. Ever since they went public with their love story, fans have bombarded them with disapproval and their petty, negative thoughts.

After Selena’s past relationships with men like Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas, Orlando Bloom, and she was even rumored to be dating Zayn Malik in 2023! Selenators feel like she’s taken a few steps down aesthetically by being with Benny.

Others feel like Selena’s relationship with Benny is a total upgrade because he treats her like a princess! Regardless of where your opinions fall on how attractive you think Benny is, fans are also pretty divided about their latest musical collaboration.

Selena and Benny linked up to release a song called “Scared of Loving You” on Valentine’s Day 2025 as part of her upcoming album, I Said I Love You First. So far, fan responses are a mixed bag.

Fans Are Critiquing Selena and Benny’s Latest Song

The newly engaged couple only dropped the track on February 13th and “Scared of Loving You” already has over 2.5 million views on YouTube — and counting. The song only runs for about a minute and 50 seconds, but its vulnerable and heartfelt lyrics leave a lasting impact on listeners.

As a music producer, record executive, and songwriter, Benny’s carved out quite the brilliant space for himself. The “Scared of Loving You” lyrics were written by Selena, Benny, and Finneas. (Yes, Finneas, who happens to be Billie Eilish’s older brother!) Selena sings the song in a tone of voice that’s light, airy, and emotional.

However, based on their Reddit thread comments, some people tuning in are less than impressed. One fan wrote, “This sounds pretty undercooked. Probably because it’s too short. Could definitely benefit from a bridge. Lyrics are cute, but it’s kind of just okay otherwise.”

Someone else who’s unhappy with the length added, “This is a weird choice for the lead single. It’s not even two minutes long. Hopefully, there will be some upbeat songs on the album, but I’m not keeping my expectations high.”

Another listener commented, “Not a fan of it. It’s so boring. Hopefully, it’s just an outro given its short run time. This song doesn’t sound like an actual song to me. It seems like it’s unfinished.”

Not everyone is slamming it, though. Others are absolutely charmed by the sound of “Scared of Loving You.” These supporters are filling Selena’s YouTube comment section with loving wishes and encouragement.

One fan wrote, “These lyrics are very raw. She must’ve written this from her heart. Oh, Benny, she loves you!”

Someone else added, “Brought tears to my eyes because I saw this girl go through so much pain through all these years. And now she gets her well-deserved happiness.”

A third fan chimed in with, “This song was made purely out of love. And I can’t stop playing it. There’s warmth and comfort in her voice. I’m so happy for both of them. Selena deserves this happiness.”

If you’re curious to know how frequently Selena and Benny have worked together professionally, it’s been quite a bit! Way before they started dating, they made musical magic in the studio as a dynamic duo multiple times.

Some of the songs Benny produced for Selena include “Kill Em With Kindness,” “Same Old Love,” “Single Soon,” and “I Can’t Get Enough.” Benny joined the cast of the music video for “I Can’t Get Enough” playfully jumping up and down on a bed with Selena in one of the scenes.

Hard to say if they saw romance coming back when they were just kicking around the songs together. What we do know is that Selena’s complete album I Said I Love You First is a full-on collaborative project with Benny. It’ll officially go up for sale on March 21, 2025.
