On his new album Fragile, Sam Ravenna delves into the precarious and shifting circumstances of life.
Fragile is slated to drop October 19, with the title track premiering today on Popdust.
Based in Lake Tahoe, Ravenna released his self-titled EP in 2017, after playing as a side man for artists like Eric Lindell, Cas Haley, Tubby Love, and Peter Joseph Burtt & The Kingtide.
Musicians from stellar bands appear on Fragile, including members of Turkuaz, Max Ribner and Tim Snider of Nahko and Medicine for the People, and Scott Flynn of Odesza, along with Rob O’Block (Frank Foster), Cas Haley, Reed Grimm, Ben Teters, and Mark Sexton (Sextones).
Comprising 14-tracks, the album blends elements of electro funk, hip-hop, and soul into scrumptious sonic concoctions. Highlights include “I Like It Here,” a song Ravenna describes as a “like song” rather than a love song. A soul-filled R&B tune, it rides a creamy melody and features Ravenna’s lush, velvety tones.
“U GIVE ME SUMTHIN” delivers classic Motown wall of sound harmonics as it relates the miracle of love, while the closing track, “Abigail,” travels on psychedelic flavors adding tension to lyrics about a relationship ready to crash on the rocks.
“Fragile” opens with sparkling synths segueing into a psychedelic funk tune. An almost frenetic piano injects jazz-fusion into the melody as a compact bass line pops back and forth. Sam Ravenna’s Fragile is good stuff.
