MUSIC | Betty Moon dishes out delicious electro-pop, ‘Parachute’

Betty Moon’s latest album is entitled Chrome. “Parachute” is the most recent single/video from the album. A retro-flavored pop-rock number, “Parachute” features a potent bassline with “stylistic hints of Jaco Pastorius,” according to noir author Bruce Woodhull, who also says, “The woman can sing; well.”

Now living in the Los Angeles area, in the beginning Moon was from Toronto, where as a teenaged prodigy she peddled more than 10,000 of her do-it-yourself records. They sold because they were good. This feat of marketing put Moon on the radar screen of the major labels, landing her a deal with A&M/Universal Records.

Moon’s talent led to success, as well as eight albums, four CASBY nominations, performances with The Offspring, Quiet Riot, Marilyn Manson, featured performer at the Sunset Music Festival, and opening for Pink Floyd.

In short, Moon has it going on!

“Parachute” merges flavors from funk, electro-pop, and dream pop into a tune glowing with brilliant esoteric erotic colors revolving around the smack of the bass. Wet guitars ramp up the sonic aspects with compact tones, as Moon’s marvelous timbres function as a capacitor for the harmonic forces.

The lyrics mirror the castles-in-the-air feel of the music.

“Smooth riding / On a dark purple night / Breaking out through the sky / Times flying / Gonna put it in drive / Chasing down the moonrise / Go uptown baby / Where the world goes crazy / I’m not afraid of falling / It’s the freedom I’m wanting / Packed a parachute and / Now it’s time to fly.”

“Parachute” liberates lustrous electric dream-pop textures riding a rhythmic funky surface. The resulting sound is cool and à la mode.
