BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN | Laughing and suspense are good for the soul

Your mom is going back to college, you’ll need to rescue your kids, and things are getting dark this week at the movies.

In Popdust’s column, Box Office Breakdown, we aim to inform you of the top flicks to check out every weekend depending on what you’re in the mood to enjoy. Looking to laugh? What about having your pants scared off? Maybe you just need a little love? Whatever the case may be, we have you covered. Take a peek at our top picks for this week…

Life of the Party

When a housewife is suddenly left by her husband, she needs to think about what to do with the next chapter of her life. She ends up following her daughter to college, ending up in the same class. But things get crazy when this mother decides she wants to indulge in frat boys and keg parties more than her little girl is even interested in doing. You’ll laugh and cringe and also be super-lucky that you’re not in either of their positions. No better way to celebrate the end of the school year on the horizon.

Breaking In

Children are being held hostage in a house, so that means it’s going to be absolutely terrifying right from the start. Someone, a mother, has found her children in this situation and is now understandably terrified. The house in which they are being held has a security system that no one can crack, and there are a ton of men guarding it even if you could figure it out. But this trick isn’t over just yet. In honor of Mother’s Day weekend, this shows how far one woman will go to rescue her beloved babies.

The Assassin’s Code

A dark detective delight for this weekend may just be what you’re looking for (this one is taking to the big screen instead of being caught up in television like we usually see the things from this genre doing). A beginning detective decides that he’s ready to finally take on his first big case but he has no idea what he is getting himself into. He’s the son of a disgraced cop, and his history is about to come back to severely cause him trouble and pain. An assassin is following his every move. The bad guy will stop at nothing from showing who’s really in charge.

They call in help from unlikely sources including a janitor and a school teacher who is battling an illness. A criminal mastermind organizes a murder and soon the parties are tied together for much longer than they thought. Who knew it was so complicated to kill someone? Or maybe it’s just whatever comes after…

To solve the matters, he decides to hire his friend to fly to New York and romance her, keeping her occupied. This doesn’t make things better.
