Irish Rappers Kneecap Oscar Nomination Snub: Too Political for The Academy?
The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced today. And the Irish rap group that’s been gaining popularity across the globe with their politically charged lyrics did not make the cut for either of the two categories they were shortlisted for: Best International Feature Film and Best Original Song.
Who Even Is Kneecap?
If you’ve not tuned into Kneecap yet, you’re seriously missing out. These lads from Belfast are all about blending sharp lyrics with even sharper political commentary, and they do it in English and Irish. They’re the voice of a generation that’s sick of the status quo and isn’t afraid to shout about it.
Oscar Nomination Snub
Everyone thought Kneecap was a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination after being shortlisted for Best International Feature Film for their movie “Kneecap”, as well as Best Original Song for their track “Sick In The Head”.
But when the nominations dropped, Kneecap was nowhere to be found. Their response?
“F**k the Oscars. Free Palestine.”
Social media’s been ablaze with fans and critics alike showing their disappointment for the Belfast trio. It’s not just about missing out on a statue; it’s about what this says concerning who gets to be heard on big platforms like this.
Kneecap’s bi-lingual movie and songs dig into topics like police brutality and corruption, and they’re vocal activists for indigenous and native cultures. Could this be the reason for the Oscar snub?
But, this isn’t just about a snub. It’s about what we value in music and the arts. Do we only applaud artists who stay in their lane and keep it light? Or do we give props to those who use their platform to spotlight real issues?
What do you think? Should the arts keep out of politics, or is that where they belong?
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place on March 2nd, 2025.
