A few months ago, iLoveMakonnen released a song called “I’ve Been Waiting,” a collaboration with the late rapper Lil Peep.
The video, out today, features Fall Out Boy, who added their voices to the track after Peep tragically passed away from a drug overdose in 2017.
Earlier that year, Peep told XXL, “one of my favorite hip-hop artists is Makonnen. One of my favorite bands is Fall Out Boy. You put those two together and that’s Lil Peep.”
According to SUS BOY, the music video’s creative director, “Peep wanted this video to bring people up into the clouds, into the fantastical world of his mind. Making it now, alongside Makonnen, is our way of visiting him again.”
Its first few frames display the phrase, “Dedicated to all those people that want to feel magic around them. And also to Peep, who inspired this magic.” The video pays homage to Peep by showing his face in a cluster of tree branches, before entering a surreal fantasy realm of pink skies, grand pianos, hot air balloons, and psychedelic dinner parties attended by gigantic moths. Like much of Peep’s catalog, it’s a collage of softness and harshness, fantasy and excess; and it winds together to form something magnetic and transportive.
“Peep and I wanted our music to help people escape from depression and their everyday world,” iLoveMakonnen added. “We wanted people to feel magic and create good memories with our music. I think this video shows exactly that.”
Best known for his visionary blend of rap and emo, Lil Peep’s legacy has continued to flourish, inspiring dozens of aspiring artists and generating legions of new fans. His posthumous album, Come Over When You’re Sober, II, was released in February 2018. He will also be featured on the new Game of Thrones soundtrack, For the Throne, out April 26.
