How HelloFresh Helped Us Stick To Our New Year’s Resolutions

I’m a really busy gal. Like really busy, so it became easy to ignore my basic needs like a nutritious dinner and a good night’s sleep for too long. My dinner routine over the past three years consisted of too many takeaways and grab-and-go meals on the way home from work, but it just wasn’t sustainable. My credit card bills were through the roof, and the charges were almost all takeout and food orders. So for my New Year’s resolution this year, I wanted to find an easy way to change my eating habits that I’d be sure to stick with. I’ve been hearing so much about HelloFresh lately from friends and colleagues so I decided to finally give it a try.

Most people know what HelloFresh is – a meal kit delivery service with pre-portioned ingredients to cook three recipes for dinner. The meals come with easy-to-follow recipe cards and take the hassle out of figuring out what will be for dinner that week. This means less time at the supermarket and more importantly, less time figuring out what we’ll eat (That being the proverbial question my husband and I fight over three times a week.) The second part relates to the food choices. One of our goals for the New Year is to eat more well-rounded meals, not just a plate of pasta or tikka masala take-out, but something with a protein, vegetable and carb – what a concept. We want to eat healthier, but it’s hard to change the way you eat when you have to make time to plan, shop, and cook during the busy week. HelloFresh solves this problem with perfectly portioned, well-balanced dinners that we can make in 30 minutes.

The best part is the food. HelloFresh sends fresh ingredients to create meals that actually taste good and adds variety to our dinners. My favorite meal yet was the Parisienne Spiced Chicken with balsamic mustard lentils and roasted chantenays. My husband wanted to prepare the chicken so I prepped the carrots and the lentils. I had never heard of chantenay carrots before, but it was easy to make – chop off the tops and pop onto a lined baking tray, no peeling required! We pan-seared the chicken with oil and a wonderful Parisienne spice blend. The result was tender and full of flavour. The lentils with the added crème fraîche were hands-down my favourite. The meal took only half an hour to prepare, and prepping together gave my husband and me time to talk and unwind without being on our phones all evening. I wasn’t sure if I’d like the balsamic mustard flavour, but it was savoury, really nice at the end of a long day.

The best part really is the quality time that I am able to spend with my husband at the end of the day. Our lives are filled to the brim and it’s easy to get caught up in the busy-ness and become disconnected from what really matters. I love that I spend less time at the supermarket and no longer have to schlep home with all the bags, and to be honest, I don’t really care what we have for dinner as long as it tastes good. Overall, we’ve found ourselves in a new routine. We have dinner together most nights during the week and we’re enjoying the new foods. HelloFresh on our doorstep is quickly becoming the new norm.
