Magic Reimagined – Meet the HBO ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series Cast Members
Two decades after Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone first hit the big screen, the Boy Who Lived is returning—this time in a bold new reimagining of J.K. Rowling’s iconic series. The upcoming HBO adaptation—titled Harry Potter—promises a more faithful, in-depth retelling of the books, with each season dedicated to a single volume in the seven-part saga. The series is slated to premiere in 2026 on HBO’s Max streaming service.
Naturally, all eyes are on the casting process, as fans wonder who can possibly fill the shoes of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint?
After months of speculation and fervent fan theories, the wait is over. A brand-new cast has been revealed, ready to step into the hallowed halls of Hogwarts and breathe fresh life into our beloved characters. Whether you’re a lifelong Potterhead or a curious newcomer, here’s your first look at the actors who will carry the magic into the next era.
John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
Albus Dumbledore, the revered Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, is a powerful and respected wizard who rules the magical world. Brilliant, enigmatic, and always several steps ahead, Dumbledore is a force even Voldemort fears. He not only recognizes the dark lord’s inevitable return but also quietly prepares Harry Potter for the battle that lies ahead.
Stepping into this splendid role is John Lithgow, following in the footsteps of the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. Lithgow—a veteran of stage and screen—recently captivated audiences in the BAFTA- and Oscar-winning Conclave. His impressive resume includes six Emmy Awards (notably for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Crown), two Golden Globes, a Tony, and an Olivier Award. Now, Lithgow will bring gravitas and sinew to the role of Dumbledore as the series revisits the Potter series.
Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
The brooding Potions Master of Hogwarts, Severus Snape, is a man of sharp intellect, deep secrets, and even deeper scars. Though he begrudgingly teaches Potions, his true passion is the Defense Against the Dark Arts—a position he is repeatedly denied. A former Death Eater and a master of Occlumency, Snape walks the fine line between darkness and redemption. His arc—transforming from a character many love to hate into one they mourn—is a potent, yet tragic, narrative strand.
Paapa Essiedu is assuming this emotionally charged role is, taking on Alan Rickman’s formidable legacy. Known for his Emmy- and BAFTA-nominated performance in I May Destroy You, Essiedu has also made a name for himself as Hamlet with London’s acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company. Essiedu’s raw talent is sure to deliver a fresh, unforgettable take on this enigmatic figure.
Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
Professor Minerva McGonagall—Transfiguration teacher and head of Gryffindor House—is the embodiment of strength, wisdom, and unwavering loyalty. Beneath her strict demeanor lies a deep sense of compassion and bravery, making her one of the most respected—and most loved—figures at Hogwarts. As a key member of the Order of the Phoenix, McGonagall stands firm in the face of evil, never hesitating to protect her students or fight for what’s right.
Reknown for her commanding presence in films like Ozark, The Woman in Black, and Albert Nobbs, two-time Academy Award-nominated Janet McTeer will assume the role of Professor McGonagall. McTeer is set to channel both the fierce authority and quiet compassion that define this Hogwarts witch.
Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
Rubeus Hagrid, the lovable half-giant and Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts, is a figure of warmth, loyalty, and surprising wisdom. Though often underestimated due to his rough exterior and larger-than-life personality, Hagrid’s heart is as vast as the magical creatures he cares for. A protector of Harry Potter and a finel friend, Hagrid’s kindness and courage make him a fan-favorite character.
Nick Frost will be playing Rubeus Hagrid (formerly played the late Robbie Coltrane). Known for his legendary roles in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Frost will tap his unique blend of humor and rugged charm for HBO’s Harry Potter. With his comedic timing and heartfelt performances, Frost is set to deliver a fresh—yet true-to-character—portrayal of Hagrid that will maintain lovable half-giant’s endearing qualities.
Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell
Luke Thallon has been announced to take on the role of Quirinus Quirrell, the timid yet pivotal Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. While Quirrell appears meek and nervous on the surface, beneath his stutter lies a character whose actions have a profound impact on Harry’s early journey. His devotion to the Dark Lord is so intense he blindly serves him and is willing to sacrifice everything to do his bidding.
Stepping into Ian Hart’s role, Thallon is sure to bring a nuanced interpretation of Quirrell. With his standout performance as Hamlet in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2025 production, Thallon is poised to expertly capture Quirrell’s duality—revealing his internal conflict and the sinister motivations that make him a key figure in Harry’s inaugural year at Hogwarts.
Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch
The ever-grumpy caretaker of Hogwarts, Argus Filch’s love for the castle is overshadowed by his disdain for the students—especially their mischievous behavior. As a squib—born into a pureblood family but without magical abilities—Filch harbors a secret, tragic longing for the magic he’ll never have. This quiet frustration adds depth to his gruff persona, making him one of the more complex characters in the wizarding world.Paul Whitehouse takes over the role from David Bradley. Best known for his work on The Fast Show and Nighty Night, Whitehouse brings a unique blend of comedy and pathos to the role. With his experience in both comedic and dramatic performances, Whithouse is well-equipped to capture the caretaker’s hidden vulnerability.
