Where would country music be without Dolly Parton?
The powerhouse vocalist, songwriter, and actress has been recording for over half a century, but her age and decades of success certainly don’t compromise her social media presence. Just take a scroll through her Twitter, which offers no shortage of throwback photos and shoutouts to her friends who’ve been by her side throughout the years.
2019 was a big year for country music, with Lil Nas X smashing chart records and acts like the Highwomen dropping new material. But let’s not forget our Queen Dolly. Let’s take a look at some of her best tweets of the year.
If you’ve ever heard “the higher the hair, the closer to God,” you’re probably from the South. If you’ve ever heard “the bigger the hoops, the bigger the…”—we’ll let you finish that one yourself—you probably were a girl in middle school. Parton combined the two phrases with a classic photo of herself, complete with massive hair and hoops.
Parton sure is a fan of a good throwback photo, especially when it includes some of her industry peers. We’re not sure why she and her pal Jane Fonda were decked out in renaissance garb, but they looked damn fabulous doing it.
If you’ve ever explored Parton’s home state of Tennessee, you might be familiar with Dollywood, her namesake theme park nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains. But the puns don’t stop there: Once you see Parton standing scarecrow style with her arms full of parrots, well, you’ve made it to Pollywood.
Is Parton extremely up to date with modern pop culture, or has “Old Town Road” transcended generations? Either way, she still showed the love for her longtime friend—and father of her goddaughter—Billy Ray Cyrus, clarifying the photo was taken “before he took his horse to the Old Town Road.”
Parton also has a plethora of reaction photos up her sleeve. This one perfectly summarizes all of our sentiments when it is, in fact, not Friday.
The appreciation for “Old Town Road” doesn’t stop, and it looks like Lil Nas X and Parton share a mutual admiration for each other. When Lil Nas X tweeted, “y’all think i can get dolly parton and megan thee stallion on a old town road remix?” Parton responded with an edited version of the single artwork featuring a pink-furred, blonde-wigged horse, definitely representing herself. So, where’s the remix, Dolly?
Maybe Parton is in tune with pop culture, after all—or she at least appreciates the instances in which today’s stars don a head-to-toe matching ensemble featuring her likeness. Post Malone wore just that, and much to our delight, Parton gave him a shout out.
Out of all the iconic generation-spanning cameos Hannah Montana blessed us with, “Aunt Dolly” has to be one of the most memorable. Though it’s been over a decade since Parton first shared the small screen with her goddaughter Miley Cyrus, she’s aged incredibly well—as evidenced by the Transformation Tuesday photos she shared.
