New York’s premiere yacht rock band, Bad Business, recently dropped their debut EP, called Day Job Guys. Now they’re back with a dazzling remix.
Bad Business is made up of Alex Vans, Jay Troop, and Floris Beore. The band’s music exemplifies what is known as yacht rock, a chic retro brand of music rife with influences of what used to be called the West Coast sound, aka adult-oriented rock. It encompasses silky vocal harmonies and smooth harmonics riding atop nuanced soft rock. Previous purveyors of yacht rock include Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, Hall & Oates, and Ambrosia.
Essentially, Bad Business takes you back to a less complicated time, to another place, where summer breezes glide gently beneath cerulean blue skies, and you partake of breakfast in a cabana on the beach.
The trio hooked up with Morgan Wiley of Midnight Magic to remix the EP’s title track. The remix conveys listeners from the beach to the dance floor by adding heady flavors of EDM, along with a throbbing rhythmic pulse full of dynamic punch from crisp percussion and a slapping bassline.
“Day Job Guys” opens with a crunchy, thumping groove flowing into a funk-lite dance tune. Bubbling, popping synth colors permeate the harmonics, giving the music a tight streaming energy. The pungent bassline infuses the tune with palpable oomph, as the synths shimmer with tight, skiffing flavors.
Reverberating vocals provide the verses with snug textures, accenting the swirling undertones of the synths. On the chorus, the tune assumes the yummy cascading colors associated with yacht rock, creamy with buttery surfaces and warm harmonies. The combination of flavors exudes a curious field of intoxicating dance vibes and velvety seductive tones.
The Midnight Magic remix of “Day Job Guys” is cool and contagious, demanding you get up and move to the groove.
