What’s The Best Place For Custom Golf Club Fittings? Big Box Store vs. PXG
I’ve been golfing for years with an off-the-rack set that seemed good enough to me. That was until my friend handed me his new custom PXG driver on the tee box and said, “Give this a whirl.”
One swing was all it took. The feel, the distance, the power… it was a night-and-day difference from my stock driver. I could only imagine how a club built specifically for my swing would feel.
My friend was raving about the benefits of custom club fitting, but all I could hear was the “thwack” of his driver replaying in my head. I needed no more convincing — I knew I had to try a custom fitting.
My Golf Superstore Fitting:
Shortly after that round, I signed up for a fitting at my local golf superstore. The store was buzzing — golfers checking out gear, putting on the green, talking shafts, and swing speed like it was a second language. It was a bit overwhelming.
I met my fitter and we began by hitting my current clubs. He pointed out how they were too short for me (I’m 6’ 4”), which could explain my inconsistent shots. So, we tried a bunch of different brands with longer shafts — PING, TaylorMade, Callaway, and Titleist.
It was really fun to test out all these brands. But, to be honest, the numbers were all over the place. Some of the shots were far better than my current set, but the results felt kind of random. On top of that, he kept throwing in swing advice which made the session more confusing. It was tough to tell the difference between clubs while simultaneously focusing on my swing adjustments.
We narrowed it down to the TaylorMade P790 Irons and PING G430 MAX 10K Driver, but the shafts he recommended were out of stock. Although I liked how these clubs felt, I was still unsure if they were actually right for my swing. Custom clubs are a big investment, so I wanted to be 100% confident before buying.
At this point, I’d taken about 150 swings and almost forgot what my original swing felt like. And when I realized they didn’t carry PXG clubs like my friend’s driver, I had to keep looking.
My PXG In-Store Fitting:
After that fitting at the golf superstore, I didn’t know what to expect from PXG’s in-store fitting. But from the moment I walked in, I was super impressed — the store is modern, organized, and much calmer than the big box store. Plus, their massive TrackMan-fitted hitting bays provide a private and professional experience.
My master fitter, Josh, greeted me with a cold beverage and we started with an in-depth conversation about what I was looking for. He assured me that PXG could custom-tailor their clubs to fit my unique swing — I was excited.
We established a true benchmark with my current clubs, and, like the big box fitter, Josh agreed that they were too short for my body type. He also pointed out a few other factors like grip size, lie angle, and clubhead weighting. So, we started testing different shaft and clubhead combinations, and Josh walked me through the swing data from each one.
We quickly found a set-up that felt comfortable and powerful in my hands. With a longer shaft, thicker grip, and customized Tungsten weighting system — these clubs felt like they were custom-built for me (because they were).
I was hitting the ball 20 yards further with tighter dispersion and more consistency. Josh complimented all my good shots and brushed off my bad ones, which boosted my confidence and made the whole experience very enjoyable.
We settled on the PXG 0311 XP GEN7 Irons and their Black Ops Driver — customized with the right shafts, lie angle, grips, and weighting for my swing. These clubs feel like an extension of my body, so I had zero doubt about making the final purchase.
Final Thoughts:
My big box store fitting felt overwhelming and impersonal. But PXG gave me the time, attention, and precision I didn’t even know I needed. Each club is built specifically for my swing — not just pulled from a rack and adjusted on the fly. Even though PXG doesn’t carry other brands, their knowledge, customization, and superior tech make all the difference.
I’ve been playing with my new custom PXG clubs for about two months now, and I just wish I’d gotten fitted sooner!
Trust me, once you feel what a truly custom-built PXG club can do, there’s no going back.
