Did you know a higher thread count doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a higher quality sheet? Turns out, it’s an old-school marketing technique that defines the number of yarn per square inch, but has nothing to do with softness or durability. For years I always thought that if the thread count was higher, the sheets would be better. For some reason, I could never find that super-soft sheet set, regardless of how high the thread count was. My sister, Jess recently introduced me to a company called Parachute, and when my new sheets arrived, not only were they the softest and most breathable sheets I had ever laid my head on, but there wasn’t a mention of thread count anywhere. After sleeping on Parachute sheets, I felt I had been missing out on years of luxury and comfort in the bedroom.
Jess has an eye for design, and picked the
Percale Sheet Set in Slate to contrast her white bedroom. Parachute’s Percale and Sateen sheets are made from 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton – which means the fabric is extra soft, strong, and durable. Her sheets remind me of the fanciest hotel I’ve ever slept in – they’re unbelievably light and breathable. I chose the Sateen Venice Set in Navy because I prefer a super soft and smooth feel. They looked amazing. The real test, however, would come when my husband came home, because he’s even pickier than I am (though he’d never admit it).
I’m delighted to say that after one night of sleeping in our new sheets, my husband and I woke up feeling as though we’d just had the best rest of our lives. We couldn’t believe the difference our new sheets made – we were asleep for 12 straight hours and felt as though we were wrapped in a cloud. In fact, neither one of us wanted to get out of bed, so we decided to eat breakfast there (we were careful not to spill!). Then breakfast became a movie. Then another movie. By dinner, we’d had a day-long marathon and one of the most fun and relaxing Sundays we’ve had in years…and I credit our Parachute sheets.
Less than a week later, I found myself ordering a set of
Percale Sheets in Powder so that we’d never have to go a night without Parachute on our bed. Once again, we weren’t disappointed. Parachute’s Percale is crisp and cool, which is great for my husband, especially on warmer days. With two sets of incredibly high quality sheets, we tossed our 800 thread count sheets – at this point, there was no going back.
A few months and many washes later, our sheets are softer than ever. I come away amazed by how something like new bedding can really improve our quality of life. These days, when anyone brings up bedding or thread count, I smile and spread the word about Parachute.
