MUSIC MONDAY | Absofacto has made peace with thousands

04.09.18 | All of these songs are part of the influence soup in Jon’s head when he’s making music. This list is basically all of his current favorite songs that aren’t massive hits everyone already knows. They hit that sweet spot of being experimental while being accessible that he tries to put in his own music.

THE BREAKDOWN

“See You Sweat”

These guys are one of the best live shows you’re ever going to see, and are easily my favorite arty rap group right now. Start paying attention, this is only the beginning.

“Childhood Dreams”

I love this song so much I covered it on Instagram & had the full starstruck feeling when she messaged me and told me she liked it. I don’t know much about ARY yet but her melodies are magic.

“GOLD”

It’s almost impossible to pick one BROCKHAMPTON song for the list but I’m going to go with GOLD because the vibe just hits me. The chords sound inspired by James Blake’s “Life Round Here,” another of my favorites, so it’s like endorphin city for me.

“Tyrant (ft. Jorja Smith)”

Kali’s music is just so sexy and cheeky. The production is new and old at the same time, in the best way. Pay attention to the vocal arrangement on this one, it’s so slick.

“Not Me (ft. Two Feet)”

Two Feet’s a great friend of mine. I supported his last tour and directed the music video for his song I Feel Like I’m Drowning. My roommate Melvv is a genius producer and basically the best guy ever. This song is homie overload for me. And for as biased as I should be because of that… it’s also undeniably so dope.

“Ballin”

I listen to this first thing every morning. It’s the only way I can get out of bed and face the day and get back on the hustle.

“Reflex”

The night I met Carlos at a mutual friend’s place, he played us this song. It was a holy shit moment for me… Going from having just met this guy to instantly being a genuine fan of his music. This was my most listened to song in the last year.

“The Distance”

Gavin opens her shows with this song and I lose my mind every time. It’s so slinky and sexy and weird and perfect and she’s wearing this reflective cloak and it’s feels like you’re on another planet that’s way funkier and better than Earth.

“Used to It”

Ashe’s voice has so much more character than your usual pop singer. The melody is pure crack. The production (by my friend Frequency) has this fat, saturated character and sounds so fresh and complex without sounding overproduced at all.

“Already There”

Yes, another ARY song. Because I have a hunch this woman is going to continue to be an absolute treasure & the second verse in this song is my favorite musical moment on this entire list.
