Since having kids seven years ago, my husband and I are still trying to get our sleep back on track. We wake up to kids poking us or literally trying to pry our eyes open with little fingers, or we stay up late to try and squeeze in an hour of alone time after the kids are are in bed. While this is all to be expected with young children in the house, we’re still desperate for sleep and will take any extra minute of down time that we get. A normal night for us consists of tossing and turning, followed by annoying muscle aches in the morning. Recently we realized that we bought our mattress before the kids were born and decided it’s well overdue for an upgrade.
My friend, who has three young children, told me about her new mattress from a company called Eight Sleep. Eight Sleep is a tech company that specializes in smart mattresses and bedding. They combine the comfort of a high-quality foam mattress with smart technology. Their mattresses are made of durable, premium foam that are engineered to be comfortable and firm. I had no idea what a “smart mattress” meant, but my husband loves that it works right alongside our Alexa and can do almost everything his wearable smart device can. Eight’s smart mattress has sleep tracking capabilities and smart home integrations. You can sync it with your smart devices like an Amazon Alexa or Google Home to do everything from turning off the lights, to brewing the coffee when you wake up, and even warming each side of the bed. Brew my coffee and heat my bed? That sounded perfect to me. All I needed was someone to entertain my kids ’til 10 am so I could sleep in, and I’d be in Heaven.
An
Eight mattress is the same price as other regular mattresses, but you also get the awesome smart features. Because all the fun tech stuff is included in the price, it was a no brainer and we had to give it a try. I was most excited about the double-sided heating feature, as I’m always cold while I sleep and my husband needs the ceiling fan on, so this was great. My husband was sold on the smart integrations, because he already tracks his sleep with his smartwatch, and with this mattress, he wouldn’t need the wearable. The fact that they offer free returns within the first 100 days, no questions asked, made us feel like there was no risk to trying out a new mattress.
The mattress arrived at our home in less than a week, and I was surprised by how excited I was to test it out (or maybe I was just thrilled about the idea of actually getting some sleep). We got the bed set up and started playing with all the features. We synced it to our Alexa and all I had to say was, “Alexa, my bed is cold” and it started heating up – magic. We set the lights to slowly dim when we got into bed and turn off when we go to sleep. We got the coffee feature connected so we’d have a fresh pot waiting for us when we woke up in the morning, and we even set the smart alarm to wake us up at our lightest sleep stage within a half hour of the set time, that is, if our kids don’t wake us up first. It felt like the
bed of the future!
All the fancy smart features aside, the bed is really comfortable.
The mattress upgrade proved to be exactly what we needed to feel more rested. I feel warm and cozy all night with the heat feature and get to wake up to a fresh pot of coffee. My husband gets to use all the smart integrations and loves tracking his sleep activity and respiratory rate, but all I care about is that I’m sleeping better than I have in years.
