Singer-songwriter Calica premieres “Give & Take” on Popdust.
“Give & Take” is about the stormy internal struggles with the passionate emotions of an intimate relationship.
Born and raised in Miami, Calica started voice and piano lessons when she was six years old. Later, she attended a high school specializing in the performing arts, followed by the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where she found her musical voice.
Shimmering synths open “Give & Take,” followed by a deep-rooted bass line flowing into a pop melody glowing with elegant colors. A rhythmic flow pervades the tune, as Calica’s vulnerable tones glide forth on lustrous textures. It’s a voice full of hushed, penetrating timbres, lush and sumptuous.
A cascading chorus bursting with trickling colors and washes of gossamer harmonies infuse the song with many layers.
The lyrics define Calica’s emotional and intellectual uncertainty as she confronts the capricious nature of love.
“So take what you want for free / Anything you want / Cause you got me running back and forth / Thought about it all night / So many times / Tell me what this all is for / We can make it all right.”
The video depicts neon-lite images of Calica walking barefoot through an empty pool surrounded by waterfalls of shiny blue and purple streamers, as she attempts to make sense of her inner turmoil. The retro ambience of the visuals underscores the themes of the song.
