Caswell Rises On ‘Surface’

South London artist, Caswell, premieres “Surface” on Popdust.

The first single from her forthcoming sophomore EP, slated to drop April 2019, “Surface” narrates the emotional pitfalls of life, passion, love, strength, and eagerness. Hazards capable of pulling you beneath the waves, as you hold your breath, fighting, and finally ascending to the surface.

Explaining the intricacies of the song, Caswell says, “This idea of surfacing to me was like coming out of a dark and suffocating place I didn’t know I was in, and reaching potential I didn’t know I had. The EP follows through a series of dysfunctional moments in a relationship and when I was out of that negative place that had been so normal to me, everything changed.”

After the success of her debut EP, The Shadow Aspect, a collection of songs flavored with her signature sound of low-slung electro-soul and pop blended with hints of jazz, Caswell was awarded the PRS Foundation’s “Women Make Music” grant, enabling her to focus on her music.

“Surface” opens with Caswell’s voluptuous Siren-like voice riding over gentle waves of synths. The harmonics pause, flowing into a buff electro-pop melody full of deep dark tones underscoring light spins of color. Gravitational ambiance juxtaposed against swirling, piercing hues give the music delicious layers.

The bridge, accented with gleaming horns, is elegant yet brawny. Caswell’s gorgeous voice is gracefully weightless, lush with washes of color, and luxuriously evocative.

“Surface” cultivates polished colors burnished to a high sheen. The dominating rhythm along with Caswell’s beguiling voice is infectious.
