It was announced today that Meek Mill’s lawyers will step in front of the Pennsylvania Superior Court and ask to overturn the rapper’s original conviction from over a decade ago.
Judge Genece Brinkley, who notoriously sent Meek Mill
back to jail following an alleged “probation violation” that even prosecutors didn’t believe deserved jail time, will no longer be overseeing his case.
Meek’s attorney, Jordan Siev, told
Complex via e-mail, “We’re looking forward to the oral argument before the Superior Court of Pennsylvania and to, hopefully, having Meek’s conviction vacated. In light of the District Attorney’s recent filing, where he supports the granting of a new trial to Meek and the recusal of Judge Brinkley, we hope to have this injustice rectified once and for all.”
It was revealed last year that Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office put together a “secret list” of suspect cops, with Meek’s arresting officer from 2007 among those named. Officer Reginald Graham was
accused of falsely testifying in court for Meek’s case, among others. Under oath, officer Graham claimed that Meek was selling drugs and pointing a gun at police officers during the time of his initial arrest, which Meek has long denied. Officer Jerold Gibson, Graham’s colleague, submitted a sworn affidavit that corroborated Meek’s denial.
The hearing is set to take place on July 16.
