"Settle down / It'll all be clear," Phillip Phillips sings in a repeated verse from his smash hit "Home." Will it, though? Phillips' American Idol coronation song and mainstream breakthrough is notably distinctive from Idol originals past in many, many ways, but its ambiguity is one of its most striking differences. Unlike past super-direct, face-value Idol songs, specifics are kept to a bare minimum, and the song's "I'm gonna make this place your home" refrain, while touching and comforting, has a vagueness to it that allows the listener to sort derive their own meaning from it.
Hold on, to me as we go
As we roll down this unfamiliar road
And although this wave is stringing us along
Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m gonna make this place your home
Just know you’re not alone
Cause I’m going to make this place your home
Ooo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo. oo-oo-oo-oo [x2]
