#44 soulDecision, “Faded” (2000)
What It Was: A romantic solicitation conducted only after a few cocktails, at which point it’s apparently acceptable to inquire if you can “hit it.” The uptempo jam—with a rap verse by the indelible Thrust—reached No. 1 in the group’s home country of Canada and #1 on MTV’s Total Request Live, helping debut album No One Does It Better to sell over one million copies worldwide. Given the flurry of drunk dial pleas of today, soulDecision was incredibly ahead of their time.
What Happened Next: The popularity helped soulDecision land a spot on tour with Christina Aguilera, and on the playlists of frat parities and sports bars throughout much of the decade. A lengthy hiatus and poorly received second album (Shady Satin Drug) led to the group’s disbanding around 2004.
Where Are They Now?: Lead singer Trevor Guthrie currently resides in his hometown of Vancouver, B.C., where he’s been sporadically recording solo material. Most notably, he released “All I Wanted” in 2009, thought to be penned for his friend and musical collaborator, Ryan Gosling. Canada, you are a truly magical place.
