I like nice things. Paying for those nice things? Not so much. I'm the type of person to sneak out of work to go buy clothes from a sample sale so I don't have to pay retail prices for exceptional goods. I appreciate finer things and craftsmanship, but I also appreciate saving a few bucks whenever I can (or else I'd be broke buying all of the things I want).
I heard about Harry's from a friend who made the switch from another brand. He was ecstatic that he could pay half the price on razors for a good shave. I was skeptical, as this was the same friend who briefly considered buying a $30,000 replica of the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones for his living room, but he assured me that he literally put this razor on a pedestal in his medicine cabinet. After visiting Harry's website, I made the switch, and I haven't looked back since (well, sneak a peek at my Truman on its stand…it's a pretty thing).
I don't use the same razor that my father did, and I'm fine with that. He wore bright patterned, polyester shirts whose unreasonably large collars extended beyond the necklines of his sweater vests and lived in an era where wood paneling was not only acceptable, but desired. He prefers the kitschy Roger Moore Bond films of his childhood to the grittier Daniel Craig Bond of today. He went to the disco. I can see where he's coming from, but shaving has evolved since then. Rather than running to the drugstore to buy refills for my rubber-finned early '00s designed handles, I prefer a minimally designed, sharp razor that's delivered to my doorstep for half the price. Free shipping is just a bonus.
The razor itself is decently weighty, but not heavy or overwhelming. The German-made blades are sharp, so I am always left with a clean chin. I even love the way that the shaving gel that came with the kit smells- it imparts a subtle, fresh scent with hints of eucalyptus. Sometimes, my friends will even ask me about my Harry's razor when they use my bathroom. Even my trendy friend from Berlin commented on its sleek design and craftsmanship. It was a pleasant reminder that I have a nice razor that looks expensive, but is super affordable. And even without all the aesthetic beauty and craftsmanship of Harry's, it's half the price of the big brands, and it just works. Somehow, Harry's manages to make a high-quality razor at a fair price point that I can be proud to leave standing on my bathroom sink.
