Glee takes on a rather serious tone in the upcoming episode, titled “Bash,” taking on homophobic violence for the first time. Sure, there have been hints of it over the past five seasons, involving Kurth Hummel (Chris Colfer) and David Karofsky (Max Adler), but nothing at this level. The violence is so horrific, it lands Kurt in the hospital, which leads to a much-needed self-realization.

Meanwhile, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) is preparing for the opening night of Funny Girl. She takes one night off from rehearsals to prepare for NYADA’s mid-winter evaluation, and surprise, Carmen Tibideaux (Whoopi Goldberg) makes her return! Rachel’s final performances don’t go as smoothly as she hoped, and she must make a decision regarding her career and her schooling. Which one will suffer?

As could be expected, Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), after living together in rather close proximity, hook-up…again. While rekindling their romance seems quite appealing, Mercedes is worried that dating a “white, unemployed dude” will tarnish her public image as a rising recording diva.

During the hour-long extravaganza, the cast takes on the songbook of Stephen Sondheim, who has penned many great songs from some of the best Broadway musicals ever–including “No One Is Alone” from Into The Woods and “Broadway Baby” from Follies.

Riley channels her inner Aretha Franklin on “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman.” She’ll also sing an original, titled “Colour Blind,” co-written by Claude Kelly and Emeli Sande.
