Is there a bottom for American Apparel?
Yes and no. There is no bottom to the queasy sexually exploitative ads for the company’s boring overpriced separates and t-shirts. But there are bare bottoms and in-your-face bottoms and every other type of bottom-centic pose in the advertisements that have made the company a continual talking point in the media.
Jezebel is running a story today citing this ad as the ‘grossest, perviest’ picture AA has ever posted.
But, in fact, this one is almost endearingly tame when compared to many of the company’s distinctively garish, soft-porn ad campaigns.
What’s going on at Jezebel?! Are they hiring Catholic schoolgirls to replace the usual cynics who’ve been calling out misogyny with the hysterical zeal of Joe McCarthy calling out Communists?
Let’s look at some real offenses by American Apparel while Jezebel takes a moment to compose itself with smelling salts.
And if you have (luckily) managed to remain clueless so far when it comes to the good ol’ American Apparel desire to constantly “push boundaries” —including multiple lawsuits filed against their CEO for sexual harassment, firing a cancer battling staffer, creating a hostile work environment, accusations of racism and of sexualizing young girls—check out the HuffPo’s rundown of AA’s top ten scandals.
