The Popdust Files: ariana grande, big sean, Right There, track-by-track reviews, Yours Truly

We’re reviewing every song on Ariana Grande’s Yours Truly today. Stay tuned for our take on all 13 tracks on the young pop star’s debut album!

You’d expect a little better from Harmony Samuels, one of the more underrated writer/producers in pop today, than “Right There,” the third advance track from Yours Truly. The song is not bad or unenjoyable by any means—in fact, it’s a totally charming, sweet, catchy throwback pop/hip-hop hybrid. The problem is that it’s the exact same totally charming, sweet, catchy throwback pop/hip-hop hybrid that Samuels and Grande already found mega-success with in first single “The Way.” Big Sean stands in for Mac Miller as the guest rapper, Lil Kim and Lil Cease’s “Crush On You” stands in for Big Punisher’s “Still Not a Player” as the ’90s jam being interpolated, and “I’ll always be right there” replaces “I love the way you make me feel” as the oft-repeated chorus hook, but the formula is totally unmissable, down to the slowed-down intro/chorus and the split-in-two guest verse.

It’s a pretty damn good formula—hell, there’s a reason “The Way” was as big as it was—but it’s impossible for it to feel as fresh the second time around, and we liked most parts of “The Way” more than their corresponding echoes here. We’ll see how good Ariana’s chemistry is with Big Sean if they make out in the video, though.

POPDUST SAYS: 3/5
