The Popdust Files: miley cyrus

Yes we are going to talk some more about Miley Cyrus today. But don’t slam your computer in outrage just yet: This post is TWERK-FREE!

In case you missed it—which is highly possible, because no one really seems to care about Miley’s genuine artistic output these days—the lady of the hour released a straight-up power ballad this week called “Wrecking Ball.” And it’s pretty good! (Or at the very least a welcome palate cleanser.)

Speaking of things no one seems to care about anymore, remember how Miley was on-and-off engaged to Liam Hemsworth? Well this song is definitely maybe about him. Let’s break it down. (Full lyrics at the bottom!)

We clawed, we chained, our hearts in vain
We jumped, never asking why

Ah, youth. We’re picture that scene from The Lion King wherein half-siblings Simba and Nala gleefully pinned each other to the ground. Only the audience knew that this playful clawing would soon turn to the sort of deep, passionate love only two lions with the same father can share. Miley and Definitely Maybe Liam (or “DML” as he is shall henceforth be referred)  felt the love that night, but do they still?

We kissed, I fell under your spell
A love no one could deny

After landing from the aforementioned jump, the two lovebirds shared that all-consuming first kiss. No one—not even her best friend Lesley, we assume—would have called it anything other than “love.”

Don’t you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can’t live a lie, running for my life
I will always want you

Whoa! What happened? Weren’t you two just clawing and kissing? Looks like Miley stepped out, and perhaps DML found out about that Barbie doll she Frenched in the “We Can’t Stop” video. Clearly, whatever Miley did meant nothing to her, and now she’s trying to beat the ticking clock of his fading love and win him back.

I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was break me
Yeah you, you wreck me

You know when you punch a guy and you end up hurting your hand more than the other guy? If not, congrats on leading a non-violent life, you! If so, then this is what we’re picturing. Emotionally. The more Miley chipped away, the more vulnerable she became to feeling hurt herself. It’s a really beautiful image. Why did she have to twerk it up…

I put you high up in the sky
And now, you’re not coming down
It slowly turned, you let me burn
And now, we’re ashes on the ground

Things are getting super emo. Here, Miley argues that she built him up, made him feel on top of the world, and he didn’t return the favor. This decision to not lift Miley up ends up biting him in the butt: they’re both on dead, yo. Emotionally. Not cool, DML.

I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was break me
I came in like a wrecking ball
Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung
Left me crouching in a blazing fall
All you ever did was break me
Yeah you, you wreck me

Some more burning imagery here, as Miley heightens the core visual. Her emotions for him were so pure and new; imagine a baby controlling a wrecking ball on a construction site…not a great plan!

I never meant to start a war
I just wanted you to let me in
And instead of using force
I guess I should’ve led you in

Miley clearly took a moment before this verse to step into DML’s shoes. “Did I start a war? I didn’t mean to,” she probably thought. “Maybe instead of forcing myself into your heart, I should have led you into mine.” Too little too late, honey. You’re ashes on the ground, if you recall. Emotionally.

Maybe if she keeps going on this path of owning some of the blame, she and DML will twerk—oops—things out?!

Yeah you, you wreck me
Yeah you, you wreck me

Definitely Maybe Not.

We clawed, we chained, our hearts in vain
We jumped, never asking why
We kissed, I fell under your spell
A love no one could deny

Don’t you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can’t live a lie, running for my life
I will always want you

I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was break me
Yeah you, you wreck me

And now, you’re not coming down

And now, we’re ashes on the ground

Don’t you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can’t live a lie, running for my life
I will always want you

I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was break me
I came in like a wrecking ball
Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung
Left me crouching in a blazing fall
All you ever did was break me
Yeah you, you wreck me

I never meant to start a war

I never meant to start a war
