The Popdust Files: katy perry, Prism, Roar

Katy Perry has made one thing clear about her upcoming new album—she’s done with cotton candy clouds and cupcake bras. Our favorite bubblegum queen is ditching her signature electric blue wig and laying her uber-sweet ways to rest. So hot on the heels of the release of “Roar,” the first single from her upcoming Prism, we have to wonder: What ruffled Katy’s hot pink feathers to the point where she’s getting dark and down to business?

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely

Katy is notoriously outspoken—her big break came in the form of a song titled “I Kissed A Girl,” after all. And while she later explained she wasn’t trying to “shock” listeners with her famous single, it’s safe to say Perry had no qualms about “rocking the boat” back in 2008. So when exactly was her tongue tied, and what made her that way?

I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

At this point, we’re thinking she’s talking about ex-husband Russell Brand. Perry says Brand notified her of their impending divorce via text, robbing her of the sort of face-to-face marriage-ending conversation Katy could have used to express her feelings. Instead, she had no choice in the matter. Interpret her cryptic references to the “real reason” Brand divorced her as being whatever pushed her past the “breaking point,” and the identity of this song’s antagonist starts to get a whole lot clearer.

You held me down, but I got up
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now

If you count dating John Mayer as getting back up and “brushing off the dust”—and we have to say, we wouldn’t necessarily—then it’s safe to say Katy has done that. Combine that with her upcoming new album, in which she assures us her voice will be heard, and Katy seems to be sending a clear message to Brand: She’s moving past the jokes at her expense.

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar

If the single’s cover art is any indication, Katy is taking this feline-to-female power image seriously. Her assertions of “dancing through the fire” call to mind her ex’s penchant for flames: Brand once ignited a dollar bill for no reason and even referenced blazes in the title of his 2007 book, Irons in the Fire. Plus, you know Katy isn’t lying about being a champion. This is a woman, after all, who tied Michael Jackson’s record of no. 1 singles from a single album.

Now I’m floatin’ like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee, I earned my stripes
I went from zero to my own hero

Fast forward to present day, and Perry is living the high life. She’s back with playboy John Mayer—though she definitely got stung a bit in their relationship. Perry said when Mayer pulled away, it was a wake-up call for her, and we don’t doubt that the hiatus stung like a bee. But, after realizing some things about herself and reuniting with Mayer, Perry is feeling better and more confident than ever.

So what do you think? Is “Roar” the empowerment anthem Katy needed Russell to hear?

The full lyrics are below. You can listen to the song at the bottom of the post!

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess

I guess that I forgot I had a choice

You held me down, but I got up
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, your hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake your ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now

‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar

Now I’m floatin’ like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero

You held me down, but I got up
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, your hear that sound

You held me down, but I got up

‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar

Roar-or, roar-or, roar-or

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar
