God only knows where music would be without Brian Wilson. The Beach Boys frontman and principal songwriter—who is ranked #52 of Rolling Stones‘ “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”—has influenced a slew of acts, from The Beatles to Red Hot Chili Peppers.
His sweet and dreamy, yet powerful vocal style was perfectly suited to the “surfer boy rock” genre that The Beach Boys essentially created. He could churn out driving rock tunes like “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” then hit you right in the jugular with insightful, longing ballads like “Don’t Worry Baby” and “God Only Knows.” The Beach Boys’ heroic eleventh studio album Pet Sounds is widely recognized as one of the greatest of all time.
Around 2006, another “Brian Wilson” started stealing a bit of Wilson’s thunder: San Francisco Giants pitcher Brian “The Beard” Wilson. We thought it’d be prudent to create a distinguishing visual so that these two would never be confused for one another.
