21-year-old pop star Charice Pempengco (known simply as “Charice”) courageously came out as a lesbian in an interview in her native Philippines yesterday.
“Opo, tomboy po ako”—which translates to “Yes, I’m a lesbian”—confessed the “Pyramid” singer to The Buzz host Boy Abunda after he addressed rumors surrounding her sexuality. Despite facing this sort of speculation for years as a result of her increasingly more tomboy-ish style, Charice had remained silent on the matter until now. Perhaps her recent guest stint as Sunshine on Glee, a show that regularly deals with the theme of homosexuality and the struggles of coming out, inspired her decision to open up.
“Now I feel free,” Charice proudly declared, “I just wanna say thank you personally to all my fans, to all the people who are still supporting me, who are still there for me, and honestly I am very, very happy.” Still, she’s aware of the possible backlash that could come with this admission: “I’d like to ask for forgiveness to those who aren’t able to understand.”
No need to ask for forgiveness, Charice—we got you.
