K-pop Chart Report: 4minute Finally Hits No. 1 With “What’s Your Name?”

After two weeks at No. 2, 4minute’s “What’s Your Name?” has finally reached the top of the GAON singles chart. It’s 4minute’s first No. 1 single as a group, and their most successful in terms of music program wins.
Most K-pop songs peak within their first two weeks out, so for “What’s Your Name?” to reach No. 1 in its fourth week is a true testament to the song’s huge success and longevity. At this rate, “What’s Your Name?” will probably close out 2013 as one of the highest-selling singles of the year, not to mention the biggest hit of 4minute’s entire career.
SECRET’s “YooHoo” manages to hold strong at No. 5 for another week, despite the fact that the group’s leader, Hyosung, is currently embroiled in one of K-pop’s typically overblown scandals after accidentally misusing the word “democratization.” The innocent mistake has led to a huge netizen backlash and the cancellation of several scheduled SECRET performances, but thankfully it doesn’t seem to have affected the group’s digital sales yet.
Popular K-diva, Seo In Young, debuts at No. 13 with her new power ballad, “Let’s Break Up.” It’s a pretty solid debut by her standards, easily out-charting last year’s “Let’s Dance,” which peaked at No. 39. The 28-year-old’s new mini-album, Forever Young, is one of the best K-pop releases of the year so far, so we’ll be watching to see if “Let’s Break Up” can climb higher even next week.
A few spots lower, 2PM‘s sexy new single, “A.D.T.O.Y.,” debuts at No. 16, while the group’s other new single, “Come Back When You Hear This Song,” drops fourteen spots to No. 21.
Meanwhile, T-ara N4′s “Countryside Life” barely manages a third week in the top twenty, falling three spots to No. 19. The girls are currently collaborating with Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, T-Pain, and Ray J on an international version of the song, which is scheduled to be released in America next month.
Nine Muses’ “Wild” jumps ten places this week to No. 22, making it the second highest-charting single of the group’s career after “Dolls.” Unfortunately, “Wild” doesn’t seem to be showing the same longevity on the digital charts as “Dolls” did, so its current position will likely be its peak.
Speaking of longevity, Girl’s Day’s “Expectation” is at No. 32 this week, despite being released back in March. The song has done remarkably well by Girl’s Day’s standards and continues to be a strong seller despite Hyeri’s dating scandal with H.O.T.’s Tony. Now would be a perfect time for the group to re-release their Expectation album with a new single to try and keep their current momentum going. We wouldn’t want to see the Girl’s Day buzz die down again, like it did when they tried to debut in Japan.
As for next week’s chart, expect Shinhwa and Lee Hyori to battle it out for No. 1.
