The Popdust Files: paramore, track-by-track reviews

This week, Paramore’s self-titled fourth album comes out, and Popdust is here to help you sort through the album’s 17 tracks. Hayley Williams and her bandmates try on a bunch of new styles, from new wave to pop-funk—and Williams even busts out the uke for a couple of confessional interludes.

A blistering rock track on which Hayley Williams splits the difference between Karen O-like spit-taking and opening up her voice to its full bloom. It might have been a curious choice for the first single—while its guitar assault resembles that of “Misery Business,” it doesn’t have that track’s skyscraping hookiness—but it makes sense in the context of the album, an urgent rush of self-doubt and adrenaline after the opening track’s “everything’s gonna be all right” assurance. When Williams sings about not giving up over scrambling drums and frantic guitars on the track’s bridge, it’s hard to not go all in with her.
Popdust Says: 4/5
