You can thank (or blame) Valentine’s Day for this week’s ballad-heavy GAON chart, with K-pop dance tracks being pushed aside to make way for a slew of sad slow jams and romantic midtempos.
As expected, SISTAR19′s “Gone Not Around Any Longer” has taken the top spot, dethroning last week’s No. 1, LeeSsang’s “Tears.” Sales for SISTAR19′s sultry smash are so strong that it’s guaranteed to remain at the top next week, and possibly even for some time after that, too. The sub-unit also have another hit on the charts with “A Girl in Love,” which is at No. 16 despite being a non-single cut from the pair’s latest EP.
Also having luck this week is Seo In Guk, who debuts at No. 4 with his new single, “I Can’t Live Because of You,” featuring well-known indie rapper, Verbal Jint. Seo In Guk shot to fame in 2009 as the winner of the reality TV singing series, Superstar K, but his popularity didn’t explode until last year when he starred in the hugely successful k-drama, Reply 1997, and appeared in K.Will’s controversial “Please Don’t” music video, playing a gay man in love with his best friend.
Another reality TV success story dominating the charts this week is balladeer, Huh Gak, who won Superstar K in 2010, one year after Seo In Guk. “1440,” the lead single from Huh Gak’s new album, Little Giant, debuts at No. 6, while various cuts from Little Giant fill up the rest of the top 100. (No. 21, 29, 42, 47, 62, 71, and 91.)
Other new debuts this week include Ra.D’s “It’s Been a While” at No. 8, indie duo 10cm’s “Oh Yeah” at No. 17, and Clazziquai’s “Love Recipe” at No. 24. Elsewhere, BoA’s latest ballad, “Disturbance,” falls 5-10, while Nine Muses’ breakout hit, “Dolls,” drops 17-33.
