The Popdust Files: Jasmine Villegas, justin bieber, Paint A Smile

Going from being featured in other stars’ music videos, to starring in her own, Jasmine Villegas made her debut in Justin Bieber’s “Baby”–as his leading lady. Their chemistry also carried into real life, and the two dated a bit before Bieb shacked up with Selena.

But aside from her romantic entanglements with Justin, Jasmine’s got her own thing going on. Her YouTube covers and most recent mixtape, S(he) Be(lie)ve(d), have earned her a set of her own diehard fans (Jasminators, if you will)–all clamoring for her debut album. “Paint A Smile” is her newest single, so anticipated that its title trended on Twitter. A song that breaks down a break up, the track is a “part two” to Jasmine’s last effort, a song about domestic abuse called “Didn’t Mean It.

The lyrics to “Paint A Smile” tell a pretty clear (and tumultuous) breakup story, as Jasmine barrels down a (figurative?) highway alongside her lover “going nowhere real fast.” Important to note that she’s in the driver’s seat—in charge of the car’s direction and speed, perhaps taking some responsibility for the relationship’s wrong turn(s). It wasn’t long ago that she believed that they could just drive like that forever: “I thought I’d never take my foot off the gas.”

But just as many relationships do, this one is ending at the speed that it began and Jasmine is left with “nothing but smeared black mascara” and, if the metaphor continues, an empty passenger seat next to her. But we all move on, and in Jasmine’s case her solution is to “paint a smile on” because “tears won’t last forever.” And, hell, even if they do, there’s always waterproof mascara.

“Paint A Smile” may detail the typical movements of a breakup, but it doesn’t shy away from giving some good advice. “I’ll forgive you, but I’ll never kiss you again,” sings Jasmine, and earlier: “I’m gonna keep my head up, brush it off.” And despite residual feelings of bitterness (“Yeah, I hope this hits you”), there’s a sense that the breakup is better off…broken: “Whatever the cost, I’ll take a loss”

Here are the full lyrics. You can play the song at the bottom of the post!

Like a car chase (yeah, yeah)
On the highway (again)
We were going nowhere real fast
I let your tear my heart out (yeah, yeah)
I wear it on my sleeve now (I do)
I thought I’d never take my foot off the gas

You made me smear my makeup
Nothing but dried black mascara
I’m letting it go…

Tears won’t last forever
Life only gets better
When the world lets me down
I’ll paint a smile on,
Paint a smile on

Break my heart, it won’t matter
I’ll piece it back together
When the world lets me down
I’ll paint a smile on,
Paint a smile on

Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa
Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa
Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa

I’ll paint a smile on,
Paint a smile on

I’ll forgive you
But I’ll never kiss you (again)
You’ll miss my strawberry lipstick
Yeah, I hope it hits you (I do)
Just like a missile
Promise you’ll never find a better chick

You made me smear my makeup
Nothing but dried black mascara
I’m letting it go…

Tears won’t last forever
Life only gets better
When the world lets me down
I’ll paint a smile on,
Paint a smile on

Break my heart, it won’t matter
I’ll piece it back together
When the world lets me down
I’ll paint a smile on,
Paint a smile on

Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa
Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa
Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa

I’ll paint a smile on,
Paint a smile on

I’m gonna keep my head up, brush it off
It’s time I feel pretty all over again
Whatever the cost, I’ll take a loss
Yeah, it’s time that I get back to me

Tears won’t last forever
Life only gets better
When the world lets me down
I’ll paint a smile on,
Paint a smile on

Break my heart, it won’t matter
I’ll piece it back together
When the world lets me down
I’ll paint a smile on,
Paint a smile on

Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa
Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa
Everybody say
Oh, oh whoa, oh-oh, oh whoa
