The Popdust Files: ashlee simpson, beyonce, snl

In case you missed it—like, if you don’t own a computer or a friend—Beyonce totally lip synced the National Anthem at Obama’s Inauguration ceremony yesterday.

Before you go crowning Beyonce The Queen of the Overdub, take a moment to remember this gigantic lip syncing blunder. During an 2004 episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Jude “Mr. 2004″ Law, former-ish pop star/sister-to-Jessica Ashlee Simpson attempted to sing her second song of the evening, “Autobiography,” but the sound engineers mistakenly played in the backing track and lead vocals for her hit song “Pieces of Me.”

Her (completely illogical) explanation at the end of the show?

“I feel so bad! My band started playing the wrong song and I didn’t know what to do, so I thought I’d do a hoedown!”

Naturally, she doesn’t quite have Beyonce’s clout (or audience reception), but we still hope Simpson sent Beyonce a consolation text today. Look guys, as Simpson said to the SNL audience, “Sometimes things happen!” Too true, Ashlee. Too true.
