The Popdust Files: academy awards, adele, fiona apple, katy perry, rick ross, Skyfall, wide awake

When it comes to EGOT-ing, who did you think would get there first: Katy Perry, or Rick Ross? Unless Rozay has some classical trained tap toes we didn’t know about, it might seem like a bit of a stretch for both, but who knows? They could be on their way. According to the first list of songs eligible for a Best Original Song nomination at the 2013 Oscars, Adele, Fiona Apple, Katy Perry and Rick Ross are all in the conversation. Yes, Mr. Rozay. Making 32908 music videos is finally beginning to pay off.

Although she’s been away from us for the last six months or so, Ms. Adkins is in the running for her Skyfall theme, while Fiona Apple gets acknowledged for “Dull Tool,” from the upcoming This is 40 and Ross’ “100 Black Coffins,” from Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, could be coming to you live from the Oscar stage in February. Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” received Grammy nominations last week, and is also eligible for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards following her full-length concert film/documentary, even though its titular “Part of Me” probably stuck with you more.

While Perry would undoubtedly do something to spice up the award show’s red carpet—much to the chagrin of Joan Rivers—and potentially give John Mayer a second turn at purse-holding, there are other scenarios we’re more interested in seeing on February 24, including: Adele making a glorious post-baby return to the live stage with a chilling live performance of her otherwise ho-hum Bond them that justifies any Javier Bardem snub; Fiona Apple posing for photos with Paul Rudd in a true ’90s child’s wet dream; Rick Ross performing shirtless and drinking Ciroc with Leonardo DiCaprio at the Vanity Fair party. Between these four, and 71 other contenders (Variety has the full list), the possibilities are endless. But as always, look out for the reformed criminals or male strippers to pull off an upset.
