The Popdust Files: 2012, Best Dressed List, fashion, red carpet, solange, style, vogue

Style bible Vogue has just released its annual Best Dressed list, and only one pop star made it into the top ten. The lucky lady is none other than Solange Knowles, Brooklyn It Girl and, of course, Bey’s little sis. Solange has flirted with fashion lots over the past year, from attending countless red-carpet events to going as J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyons’ date to the CFDA Fashion Awards (a grown-up, Vogue-approved version of prom, otherwise known as fashion’s Oscars) to DJing designer Diane von Furstenberg’s Fashion’s Night Out party. Oh, and she also dabbled in modeling as the face of Madewell. Now, she’s been officially minted a Style Icon. It’s about time.

Solange generally looks great all the time (how annoying, right?) but she really turned it on this year. Here, her 15 best looks from 2012. Look and learn ladies, look and learn.

1. Classic Solange: A bold print, pretty lipstick, big hair and super-cool accessories. The singer wore this dress to the 22nd annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards in NYC on Monday.

2. Looking uncharacteristically like a sexpot, Solange wore a plunging gown and slicked-down hair to an event in NYC on October 22nd.

3. How cute is this? Though the dress is certainly attention-grabbing, Solange pairs it with equally fun gold-and-black heels and simple gold jewelry. She donned this getup for the opening night of the ballet in NYC in October.

4. On most anyone else a pink shorts suit and a graphic black-and-white turtleneck would look silly, but Solange manages to make it chic. And the matching heels? Love.

5. At Milan Fashion Week in September, Solange makes a simple white dress pop with red lipstick and metallic accessories.

6. Dressed in Just Cavalli for the designer’s boutique opening in Milan, the singer highlights a few of her best assets. The day-glo pumps are an unexpected pop of color against that all-white outfit.

7. Mixing prints like a pro, Solange hits up a fashion show in Milan.

8. With a print and a cut this unconventional, she wisely tones her accessories down.

9. Though it’s prim and proper, Solange makes a J.Crew shift look like a million bucks on the CFDA Awards red carpet thanks to a perfect fit, avant-garde heels and a contrasting clutch with a similarly-sized print.

10. For a garden party benefitting the Museum of Modern Art this past spring, Solange selected another very interesting print. Of course, she accessorized with a bold lipstick and a standout clutch.

11. She can do quirky, she can do sexy and she can totally pull off elegant. Wearing one of her favorite shades, Solange shuts it down at the Met Costume Institute Gala in May.

12. In yet another example of pulling off the nearly impossible to pull off, Solange makes colorblocking look like a piece of cake in deep purple and red at a store opening in NYC in April.

13. The bright yellow returns, this time paired with three other bright colors. Lesson: Don’t be afraid of clashing.

14. Solange takes three trends—lace, structured top-handle bags and bright statement shoes—and wears them all for a Dolce & Gabbana runway show in January. Surprise, she looks awesome.

15. Here she is, working the runway and being generally gorgeous at an Alberta Ferretti show during Milan Fashion Week.
