The stars just don’t seem to be aligned in OutKast’s favor these days. Nine years ago, they were arguably both the most popular and the most critically acclaimed hip-hop act on the planet, but since then, there’s been only sporadic production from OutKast, as both Andre 3000 and Big Boi remain busy with their solo work, and just can’t seem to get on the same page at the same time as a duo. It’s been six years since they released an album together, and four years since they even appeared on the same song.
With a new Big Boi album coming—Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors is due Dec. 11th—the opportunity would certainly be there for ‘Dre to hop on some of the tracks and give fans a taste of that old magic. Mais non—Boi says that his efforts to get Mr. 3000 to show up on his album were for naught. The cause of the missed connection…?
He could’ve been on any song he wanted to. I gave the motherfucker about 5 songs, but I guess he was just too busy. He said he had to do some Gillette shit [room erupts in laughter]. No for real. He said he had some contractual obligations.
That “Some Gilette shit”—and boy do we love that phrase—likely has to do with goofy facial-hair-related commercials like this one:
If it really is such ads providing the conflict preventing OutKast from recording together…well, that’s not exactly an even pop culture exchange, is it? We wouldn’t call Andre 3000′s series of Gillette commercials the “Stankonia of razor ad campaigns,” certainly.
