War is Over: “Gangnam Style” Can Not Defeat “One More Night”

Maroon 5 Charts

The Popdust Files: charts, Diamonds, gangnam style, maroon 5, One More Night, PSY, rihanna

Well, Psy put up a good fight, but now the battle appears to have drawn to a close. The K-Pop star’s “Gangnam Style” spent seven weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, pushing for that #1 spot, but could not unseat the apparent juggernaut that is Maroon 5′s “One More Night.” Psy now slips all the way down to #5 on the charts, while “One More Night” spends one more week—its ninth, surely ranking it as the least-actually-popular nine-week #1 single in Billboard history—at the top of the charts.

We are now getting into real danger territory as a society, as the ninth week on top for “One More Night” ties M5 with Our Girl Carly Rae Jepsen for the year’s longest-running #1 hit (and betters Gotye and Kimbra’s eight weeks for “Somebody That I Used to Know”). That’s terrible enough in itself, but the truly unthinkable could come next week, as “Night” could actually pass “Call Me Maybe,” and tie with Rihanna and Calvin Harris’ “We Found Love” for the longest-running #1 since the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” topped the charts for 14 weeks back in 2009. Heavy, heavy shit for a mediocre, mediocre single.

Luckily, the pop charts might have a savior on the way. Not that Rihanna’s “Diamonds”—which moves from 4-2 on the charts this week and seems very likely to take over on top next week—is particularly great shakes either, but at least Ri has the far superior pop track record, and would have another eight weeks to go before it provided any threat to Our Girl and her year’s-best single. We’ll take our chances with “Diamonds” at this point over spending One More Week with Maroon 5, no doubt.
