Azealia Banks’s new video for “Atlantis” is definitely a departure from the bare-bones styling of “212″ and the high-fashion vibe of “Van Vogue.” “Atlantis” is like a Magic Eye poster come to life, a tribute to all sorts of ’90s fashion trends both good and questionable. In it, Azealia sports green hair and horns, rides digital dolphins, emerges from a shark’s mouth in a plume of ocean spray and dances on shellfish. And though the clothes look throwback, they’re all new and sourced from ASOS—which makes sense, as Banks is one of the new faces of the British-born e-shop. Still, we can’t help but note that her looks are heavily inspired by a few video classics. Consider this a ’90s style primer, and a playlist.
1. PURPLE LIPSTICK
This was a huge look in the nineties, sported by everyone from Foxy Brown to Blaque. We’re particularly fond of the shade worn by En Vogue’s lead singer in the dramatic video for “Don’t Let Go (Love).”
Prior to Azealia pasted a sparkly dot on her forehead, Monica wore one while pining over a guy and warring with Brandy in “The Boy is Mine.”
3. WORK BOOTS
Lug-soled work boots were a Nineties mainstay. Long before they were dancing in the ocean and chasing waterfalls, TLC was grooving in baggy clothes and big boots for “Hat 2 Da Back.”
4. BAGGY PANTS AND A CROP TOP
It was a popular outfit, but we think Aaliyah rocked a crop top and baggy pants better than pretty much anyone else of that decade. When Azealia was still in grade school, Aaliyah was deep in a cave, hanging out with her pet hawk and a bunch of other hard-body dancers for “Are You That Somebody.”
5. METALLIC BOOTY SHORTS
In the video for her remix of “Heartbreaker,” Mariah roller-skated around in just a pair of tiny gold shorts and a gold bikini top—classic Mariah move—while guest stars Da Brat and Missy Elliott stayed a lot more covered up.
