Britney Spears Strives for Normal, Appears Fashion-Phobic and Possibly Be-Wigged

For the December issue of Lucky, the magazine’s staff selected one of the biggest pop stars of all time. Yes, Miss Britney Spears graces the cover, and on it she is modeling a very unlike-Britney-Spears outfit. We’re used to seeing the singer wearing either something skintight (for her on-camera duties) or something super-casual (for fast food runs with her two kids). But Lucky‘s style team decided to go in a much different direction, outfitting the X Factor judge in a pretty yet conservative BCBGeneration black top, a fitted red H&M pencil skirt and a pink leather bow belt. It looks like she’s about to hit an office holiday party.
It seems that the mag is trying to make Brit appear super-normal and approachable, a matter that’s addressed over and over again in the accompanying interview. In fact, as writer Sarah Miller remarks in the very first paragraph: “If you want to know what Britney’s like, well, the truth is she’s a lot like you.”
The mega-rich pop star plays to theme, admitting to acne problems when discussing her beauty routine (“I really just wear mascara all the time. And powder, because I have zits”), confessing to dressing like a slob at home with her fiancé Jason Trawick (“He says he doesn’t mind that I sit around in sweats all the time”) and talking about the boring stuff she does when she’s not working (cook, garden, work out, play Connect Four).
Where it gets weird, though, is when the topic changes to fashion and Brit appears to be intimidated by the whole thing. When Miller asks her about how many shoes she has, she responds “with a terrified look” that it might be 50 and then asks if that’s enough. She also says that she hates socks (luckily, she lives in LA—a place of perpetual sunshine) and loves big earrings, the kind “with loops and feathers.”
The cover has already proven controversial, with the meanies over at The Daily Mail positing that Brit is wearing a wig and the team at Fashionista alleging that she’s been photoshopped. Pick up the magazine when it hits newsstands on November 6th to judge for yourself.
