Despite the fame, fortune and legion of screaming fans, musicians just can’t help dreaming of becoming decorated sports stars. It’s a two-way street, of course, but from Master P leaving hip-hop for hoop dreams to Lil Wayne giving skateboarding 100% of his attention, pop stars have a storied history of being welcomed to the court/field/rink/pitch with the assurance that they won’t be completely embarrassed by the professionals. But why the hassle? Don’t they get all the free sneakers and Pepsi they want for simply selling records these days?

Members of One Direction put their love of football towards a good cause on Monday night, by attending a charity match held at Keepmoat Stadium in the English town of Doncaster, South Yorkshire. But they weren’t just there to let their fan flags fly. Louis Tomlinson, 20-year-old Doncaster native and lifelong Rover supporter, grabbed a white No. 17 jersey and suited up with his team the Three Horseshoes to face off against the local favorite, with proceeds going to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospital.

We’ve seen pop stars suit up against their own athletic heroes before, and from the looks of it, Louis wasn’t half bad.

If need be, he can always distract his opponents with that magical voice.

Bandmates Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Niall Horan all made the trip out to the pitch, enthusiastically cheering their Louis on from the sideline.

Niall even helped out by holding signs!

The guys were also joined by Louis’ girlfriend, Eleanor Calder, who watched from the stands and was proudly decked out in her own No. 17 jersey. If this side project gets serious, she might want to talk to Cheryl Cole about what it’s like to be one of the WAGs.

After the official match was over, Harry changed into football cleats before taking the field to play around with the ball. You’ve gotta respect the turf.

Football obsessive Niall gave it a go, too, but wound up talking to the referee instead.

That’s so Niall.

Good to seem the boys are overcoming their admittedly modest skill set and living out their childhood dreams—in football, natch.

But how long do we have to wait before the One Direction vs. The Wanted charity game? We’d be there with cleats and shin guards on, but we question whether one stadium could handle the sheer volume of cheers, as well as the passionate fan fights erupting in the stands. Play nice, everyone. This is all still just in the hypothetical stages.
