No Nicki or Gabby, But a Whole Lot of Alicia in “Girl on Fire” Video

With a high-profile debut at the MTV Video Music Awards behind it, featuring not only a guest verse from Nicki Minaj but a special appearance from Olympic hero Gabby Douglas, the music video for Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” almost seems like an afterthought. Neither Nicki or Gabby show up for the video this time out, but Alicia (with some help from legendary video director Sophie Muller) captivates throughout, lounging on her bed, snapping green beans with the family, and generally looking like she’s getting ready to audition for a lead inPorgy & Bess. We’re not really sure what’s going on in this video most of the time, but it’s damn fun to look at.

We’re still not huge fans of the song, but a Sophie Muller-directed video has very rarely not helped a pop song seem more likeable, and this one is certainly no exception. That Nicki verse wasn’t so great anyway.
