The Popdust Files: demi lovato, dubstep, jay-z, trends

When the auto-tune movement was at its absolute saturation point, Jay-Z released “D.O.A. (Death of Autotune),” single-handedly putting a stop (in his own mind, anyway) to the overuse of the gimmick in popular music. Whether or not it was her intention to do the same to dubstep’s infiltration of the mainstream, Demi Lovato has set a Jigga-worthy precedent for pop stars jumping off the wub-wub bandwagon with her recent interview in Teen Vogue Magazine, in which she stated that she wanted no part of the trend:

I will say that I’m tired of all the dubstep that’s on the radio right now—I think it’s going to be out in two months. I want to make something that people will listen to for a while, rather than something that’s just trendy.

Two months! That means it’ll barely make it to Thanksgiving! (And that we’re almost certainly going to be missing out on A Very Dubstep Christmas—dammit.) Bold prediction from Ms. Lovato, and one that makes for interesting timing coming out on the same day of Taylor Swift’s premiere flirtation with the genre. But Demi couldn’t have known that it would be published on the same day back when she gave the interview…could she? Uh-ohhh….
