The Popdust Files: Kendrick Lamar, lady gaga, partynauseous

When the tracklist for Kendrick Lamar’s debut LP good kid, m.A.A.d city was released, we were too preoccupied with “The Recipe” being relegated to bonus track status (seriously?? one of the best rap singles of the year, a bonus track??) to notice another name conspicuously absent from the album: “PartyNauseous,” Kendrick’s Lady Gaga collaboration that was supposed to debut a month ago.

Indeed, the big-ticket collaboration, guaranteed to add a couple thousand or so to Lamar’s sales total at a minimum, will not be appearing on the album as intended. Why, you might ask? Well, Stefani’ll take a crack at explaining that one, from her Little Monsters website:

I apologize to the fans that this situation with Partynauseous is confusing. To it clear it up I must explain this. When I collaborate with an artist i work solely with them, not with their camps or management. Its purely organic and creative. I love Kendrick dearly as a friend, but was not willing to compromise musically to the changes his team was making to my music. This is why I am not his record. I have a very specific vision as a producer and songwriter, and I always have. That song will be released at a different time, for a different project. I love you, and think you should check out his stuff because he is truly great. He’s a good kid, its just sometimes a mad city. -LG

Bummer—for Kendrick even more than us, probably—but makes sense. And “This is why I am not his record” will make a great title for a future Lady Gaga autobiography.
