The Popdust Files: charts, gangnam style, maroon 5, one mire night, PSY

Ooh baby, give them one more week. Maroon 5 notches their third consecutive frame on top of the Billboard Hot 100 this week with “One More Night,” a song which probably never should have topped the charts in the first place and is now officially overstaying its welcome. It wouldn’t be a matter of huge urgency if it was still competing with Taylor Swift, but now that we have Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” a song that gets more and more phenomenal by the day—Mark Cuban and College Humor are just two of the latest to take it on—clogging up the number one spot can no longer be taken lightly.

Meanwhile, a number of big names make some big debuts behind the two artists on top. Taylor Swift still has a little work to do if she’s gonna make it two-for-two on the RED number ones, but second single “Begin Again” does make an impressive landing at No. 7 this week, propelled by nearly 300k in first-week sales. Selling slightly less are Ke$ha’s 2012 comeback “Die Young,” which debuts at No. 13, and Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” coming in at No. 16.

Next week should be another week of high debuts, as newly released singles from One Direction (“Live While We’re Young”), Bruno Mars (“Locked Out of Heaven”) and once again, Taylor Swift (“Red”) make their initial chart impacts. And if Psy isn’t number one by then, we might have to hold some sort of flash-mob protest. (Flash protests? Is that a thing?)
