The Popdust Files: Begin Again, red, taylor swift, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together

In anticipation of her album, Red, Taylor Swift is premiering bits and pieces of her newest music on Good Morning America this week, before its release on October 22. To kick things off, Taylor sent her love to her ABC morning show pals, along with “Begin Again,” a post-break-up ballad about putting oneself out there, as in the big bad world full of potential heartbreak and dating disasters. In her own words:

It’s actually about when you’ve gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself and you go on that first date after the break-up, and the vulnerability that goes along with that.

The lyrics reference a former relationship that went sour, in comparison to something promising and new that’s suddenly materialized. “I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny / Cause he never did,” Taylor sings, before revealing that her entire view on love has since been revitalized: “I’ve been spending the last 8 months/ Thinking all love ever does is break, burn, and end / But on a Wednesday, in a cafe, I watched it begin again.” Aww. So who’s the lucky guy? We have a good idea—quick, someone get us the names of every cafe in Hyannis Port, Mass.—but it’s never not fun to ramp up the Taylor Swift Relationship Guessing Game.

“Begin Again” would make a logical follow-up to “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” chronologically speaking, but also exists as a look at the vulnerable side of Taylor—or anyone who’s experienced heartbreak—rather than the person who thrives among the confident, definitive kiss-offs. The dating world is scary and sometimes weird, and it’s reassuring to have a song reflect those feelings of uncertainty and second-guessing. We are, of course, assuming the next song Tay previews will be a jubilant celebration of a new relationship that’s already crushed the dysfunction portrayed in “WANEGBT.”

Taylor’s “Begin Again” will be available on iTunes at midnight; listen to a preview below.
