The Popdust Files: barack obama, beyonce, jay-z, Michelle Obama

While many were watching a continued string of Voice hopefuls rest their dreams of stardom with Adam Levine, Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed friends and political personnel to their fundraiser for Barack Obama at Hov’s 40/40 Club in New York City Tuesday night. At $40,000 a plate, this was an exclusive fête for those with plenty of expendable cash—or the willingness to sell a kidney—that trumped Jay’s fancy tuxedos-strongly-encouraged performances at Carnegie Hall earlier this year. “Let me just begin by saying to Jay and Bey, thank you so much for your friendship,” gushed Mr. President. “We are so grateful. Michelle and Malia and Sasha are mad at me because they are not here.” Eh, don’t feel too bad, Barack. Your girls did attend Bey’s Atlantic City show without you.

Obama went on to praise Beyoncé for being a great role model to his daughters and young women everywhere (“because she carries herself with such class and poise”), continuing the mutual adoration that’s brightened what at times has been a dark and depressing election year. He even made jokes! “Jay-Z now knows what my life is like. We both have daughters, and our wives are more popular than we are,” Obama said. “So we’ve got a little bond there. It’s hard, but it’s okay.” The crux of his speech would eventually touch on the additional bonds shared with music’s hottest couple:

And the good thing about so many of us here–and I know, I speak for Jay and Bey–is we remember what it’s like not having anything, and we know people who were just as talented as us that didn’t get the same break, the same chance. We remember some of our parents or grandparents who came here as immigrants and got a little bit of help along the way to go to that school or be able to start that first business.

Note the repetitive, and completely endearing, use of “Jay” and “Bey.” He’s just like us! Or, as Rookie puts it, Barack Obama is basically “a teenage girl.” How much longer before this foursome is renting a summer share on the Vineyard?
