The Popdust Files: christina aguilera, feuds, lady gaga, twitter

The best thing about following celebrities is that, because we don’t know them personally, we’re free to interpret their actions any way we see fit. Take this tweet from Lady Gaga, concerning Christina Aguilera’s new single, “Your Body”:

@therealxtina just bought your new single. Seems the old Christina i loved has returned! Congratulations!!

At first glance it’s a nice compliment from one pop star to another. A-Listers gotta stick together!

But put it in the context of Gaga’s feud with Aguilera a few years back (to refresh: “I’m not quite sure who this person is, to be honest. I don’t know if it is a man or a woman,” said Aguilera; ”I think sometimes [Christina] gets insecure because of all of the success Gaga has had not realizing that she was already successful before Gaga came out. … I miss the old Christina Aguilera,” said Gaga surrogate Akon) and suddenly you can see everything in a different light.

Just like on the campaign trail, Gaga’s using some dog-whistles here: “the old Christina” is code for Xtina before she, in the minds of the Germanotta camp, starting trying to bite Gaga’s sound and style. Mama Monster’s complimenting Christina, yes, but in the same way you’d compliment a dog for not jumping on your party guests. They’yre congratulating her on staying in her place.

Or maybe we’re just imagining things. Maybe Gaga and Aguilera have put their feud behind them and this is just a harmless compliment. But a blogger can dream!
