The Popdust Files: kanye west, keri hilson, kim kardashian, Knock You Down, Reggie Bush

Kanye West has apparently been on a years-long cryptological campaign to convince Kim Kardashian of his love for her, says TMZ—who is really going hard after this Kim-and-Kanye thing, aren’t they?—this morning.

The talented Mr. West, who fancies himself something of a codesmith, first began planning his epic trail of hints and allusions in 2009, when he guested on Keri Hilson’s “Knock You Down.” According to “sources close to” the rapper, Kanye was smitten with his old pal Kim, who was dating NFL star Reggie Bush at the time, and laid clues in the song for anyone to see.

The evidence, skillfully unwrapped by TMZ [emphasis added]:

You was always the cheerleader of my dreams

To seem to only date the head of football teams

And I was the class clown that always kept you laughing

We were never meant to be, baby we just happened.

The “we just happened” line, written three years before Kanye and Kim got together? A smokescreen. Kanye is a a master cryptographer, painting webs of illusions with skillful feints and dodges.

Later, the pièce de résistance:

You should leave your boyfriend now.

Voila! The code has been broken! Kanye has been “obsessed with [Kim] for years,” and there’s no other explanation.
