The man responsible for discovering Justin Bieber on YouTube and introducing him to Usher just can’t resist the promise of another viral sensation. After The Bieb’s public endorsement Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” led Scooter Braun to welcome her to the fold, the 31-year-old manager has signed another YouTube star to his Schoolboy Records label. According to Billboard, South Korean hip-hop star Psy, whose “Gangnam Style” and accompanying choreography has been permanently stuck in your head since July, has been signed to Schoolboy—a division of Universal Republic—with the goal of releasing a successful album here in the United States.
Braun’s infatuation with the song—which just beat out Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City’s “Good Time” in our Pop-Off poll, and is now facing off with “Birthday Song” by 2 Chainz—was never a secret, thanks to multiple declarations of love via social media. (He’s not alone there.) Never one to let an opportunity slip through his fingers, he cleared up rumors of possible partnerships by welcoming Psy to the Golden State to discuss business strategy and the drinking habits of their respective countries. “We’ve been out here in California for four days, becoming friends and we’ve come to an agreement to make some history together, [to] be the first Korean artist to break a big record in the United States,” Scooter tells the camera in Monday’s “public announcement,” before sealing the deal with a shot of Soju. If you haven’t heard of it before, the mysterious liquid is a “really, really strong liquor straight from Korea,” or just plain rubbing alcohol to all you underage folk. (Do not try this at home!)
Aiming for history might be a bold move, but Scooter has the track record to back it up; scroll through his most recent tweets for a reminder of what his current roster of artists—Bieber, Jepsen, Cody Simpson, The Wanted—have accomplished in 2012 alone. Appearing at Thursday’s MTV Video Music Awards is a good start for Psy’s quest for American domination, but how long until he gets added to Bieber’s Believe tour?
