The Popdust Files: taylor swift

Ahh, the good old-fashioned one-shot video. A particular fixture in the ’90s, popularized by the influential video director likes of Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry, the one-shot formula has given us such classic videos as Lisa Loeb’s “Stay (I Missed You),” the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” and Weezer’s “Undone (The Sweater Song),” and is an always-welcome sight on MTV, or wherever people watch vids these days.

Looks like Taylor Swift is bringing the form back with the video to her chart-topping single—two weeks in a row now!—”We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” In a teaser posted to, Taylor sings the song in a living room full of friends (one of whom is dressed as a donkey?) dancing to the song, adding to the high-school singalong vibe of the whole thing. The clip is a continuous shot, and as MTV describes, the entirety Declan Whitebloom-helmed clip was “shot with only one camera, in one continuous take.”

Hard to get a sense of the video at large from the short teaser, but kudos to Taylor for adding another entry to this rich music video legacy. Wax would be proud.
