The Popdust Files: taylor swift
We already basically knew about this, and can’t say we didn’t see it coming all along, but “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” has reached the peak of the mountain, and Taylor Swift has her first-ever #1 single. Billboard reports that “We Are Never” had the best sales week ever for a female artist, moving 623,000 copies in its first week, second only to Flo Rida’s “Right Round” (with 636k) for the best sales week of any artist.
It’s enough, along with its jump to #14 on the Radio Songs chart, to get it to #1 on the Hot 100, a feat approached by several Taylor singles—”You Belong With Me” and “Today Was a Fairytale” both peaked at #2, “Mine” at #3,” Love Story” at #4—but not previously achieved by any. Taylor’s best sales week before this one was for the Christmastime sales week for “Story,” when that song sold 360k.
Now that Taylor has filled the last remaining box of her pop superstardom checklist, we have to wonder if this officially puts her in the discussion for the biggest pop star on the planet. She’s basically done everything, from winning an Album of the Year Grammy (for Fearless) to having a sold-out worldwide tour to selling a million copies of an album in a debut week (with Speak Now). Now that she’s got the #1 single to her name—which Justin Bieber, arguably her main competition, is still lacking, by the way—her name’s gotta be mentioned as a possibility.
Of course, scoring the one #1 still puts her six behind Katy Perry and ten behind Rihanna, so perhaps we shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves. Nonetheless, it’s a big day for Taylor, and certainly bodes well for the release of Red in about two months. Let’s hope for Taylor’s sake there are more Max Martin collabs to come on the album.
